How to Check Your GPA in Canvas (And Why It's Wrong)

If you have ever opened Canvas and tried to figure out your GPA, you have probably noticed something frustrating: the numbers do not add up. Canvas shows you percentages for each course, but it does not actually calculate your GPA. There is no single place in Canvas where you can see your cumulative grade point average across all your classes.

Why Canvas grades are misleading

Canvas calculates your grade within each course based on the grading scheme your professor sets up. Some professors use weighted categories (exams worth 40%, homework worth 20%, etc.), while others use total points. The problem is that a 92% in one class might be an A while a 92% in another class could be an A- depending on the grading scale. Canvas does not standardize this.

How to manually calculate your GPA

To get your real GPA, you need to convert each course's letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, etc.), multiply by credit hours, sum everything up, and divide by total credit hours. It is tedious, error-prone, and you have to redo it every time a grade changes.
